Suspense is sometimes exactly where you expect to find it, and Sheffield is where we expect to find it.
This week we blessed by darkness as the well-loved theatre group, The Company, is bringing something new.
As we enter the cusp of the dark season, “The Turning at Bly Manor” is on its way starting Wednesday (the 30th) of September, and it looks to be reaching for that fantastic fix of classic horror we dream of while admiring the sacrificial fire.
The Turning of Bly Manor is an adaptation of Henry James’ “The Turn of the Screw”, a seminal Gothic work, and one which continues to fascinate and provide new readings across our changing times. Fans of the new might also recognise the reference to Mike Flanagan’s “The Haunting of Bly Manor” a modern classic in it’s own right. This play looks like an adaptation of both, a collision of the billowing dark curtains of old with the hum of the fears of modernity. We are keen to see how this is handled and what appears when the lights go down for this show.
Classically it is supernatural in nature in that time-honoured and well loved setting of a haunted house. But what looks interesting from this trailer is that this adaptation seems to revolve around both the phantasmal and the horror from the “old ways” in a kind of unholy, forbidden tryst. The Ideologies are clashing and we hope there are sparks.
We love a bit of a concoction. After all, the best broth is not made from root vegetables alone, a bit of barley goes a long way too. From what we can see from the the poster is that delicious wicker symbology that points to something more human alongside the spooky, not just ghosts and a series of taps.
This is all good. Folk Horror has been in vogue in recent years and naturally we are fans, so a new arrival is always welcome even if we sometimes seem a bit too familiar…
